North Carolina licenses plumbing at the contractor and technician level statewide. The Plumbing Contractor exam requires 2 years (4,000 hours) of on-site experience — and up to HALF of it can be replaced by directly-related academic or technical training. Plumbing Contractor on 4,000 hours
2 years (4,000 hours) of on-site full-time plumbing experience — whether or not a license was required for that work — qualifies you for the contractor exam. Score is reported immediately; activate the license within 45 days of passing.
Trade school counts for up to half
Up to 2,000 of the 4,000 required hours (45 quarter / 30 semester hours) may come from academic or technical training directly related to plumbing — one of the strongest school-credit rules of any state.
Technician license first
With 2,500 hours (Class II) or 3,000 hours (Class I) you can sit the Technician exam and work in that capacity while accruing the contractor-level hours.
Licensed in another state
No formal reciprocity agreements. Exceptions: a Technical Examination Waiver with SOUTH CAROLINA (you still pass NC's business & law exam), and the Neighbor State Recognition Act — NC residents holding a Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia or West Virginia license may qualify for equivalent licensure. Out-of-state experience hours are otherwise accepted toward exam eligibility.
