Apprenticeship to journey-level
Complete a California-approved plumbing apprenticeship (completing one meets CSLB's definition of journeyman), then count 4 years of journey-level work within the last 10 toward the C-36. A completed apprenticeship also earns experience credit on the application.
Qualify on documented journey-level experience
Document at least 4 years of journey-level (or foreman/supervisor/contractor) plumbing experience within the last 10 years on the Certification of Work Experience form, signed by a qualified certifier. CSLB randomly audits these statements.
Technical training + experience
Certified transcripts from an accredited degree or technical program in a construction-related field can earn credit toward the 4-year requirement — but some hands-on journey-level experience is always required.
Licensed contractor in another state
California has no general plumbing reciprocity. Out-of-state contractor experience counts toward the 4 years (CSLB verifies it was lawfully gained); exam waivers exist only in narrow B&P §7065.1–7065.2 cases.
