DOL apprenticeship + 1 journeyperson year
Route 1: complete a 4-year US DOL-approved HVACR apprenticeship, then 1 year as a journeyperson under a licensed Master HVACR Contractor, then Board approval (monthly meetings) and the exam. License issues ~15–20 days after the fee processes.
Degree routes
Route 2: an HVACR bachelor's + 1 year of experience. Route 3: a related bachelor's + 3 years. Route 4: a 2-year trade/community-college degree + at least 2 years of a DOL apprenticeship + 1 year of experience (N.J.A.C. 13:32A-2.1).
Licensed in another state
No HVACR reciprocity is published, and the grandfathering window closed in 2014 with no waivers (N.J.S.A. 45:16A-26) — out-of-state contractors qualify under one of the four routes and take the NJ exam.
