Apprenticeship / on-the-job to journey level
Train under a licensed C-20 contractor or through a state-approved sheet metal/HVAC apprenticeship. Completing an apprenticeship meets CSLB's journeyman definition; 4 journey-level years within the last 10 qualify you for the C-20.
Qualify on documented experience
Document 4 years of journey-level (or foreman/supervisor/contractor) HVAC experience within the last 10 on the Certification of Work Experience form. CSLB randomly audits experience claims.
Technical training + experience
Certified transcripts from an accredited construction-related degree or technical program can earn credit toward the 4 years; hands-on journey-level experience is still required.
Licensed in another state
No HVAC reciprocity — out-of-state experience counts toward the 4-year requirement after CSLB verifies it was lawfully gained; narrow exam-waiver provisions exist under B&P §7065.1–7065.2.
