Are the trades really "AI-proof"?

Three structural facts protect skilled-trade work, and none of them is about intelligence:
1. The work is physical, on-site, and unpredictable. Rewiring a 1948 house, finding the actual leak behind the drywall, diagnosing why a heat pump short-cycles in one specific attic — this is manipulation in unstructured environments, which remains the hardest robotics problem, not the easiest. Software automates the predictable; a service call is the opposite of predictable.
2. The license is a legal moat. In most states, electrical and plumbing work may only be performed by (or under) licensed humans — Washington's RCW 19.28, Texas's Electrical Safety and Licensing Act, Illinois's Plumbing License Law. A robot cannot hold a journeyman card. Automation that assists a licensed tradesperson raises their productivity and wage; it cannot legally replace them without legislatures rewriting the safety codes of fifty states.
3. Demand is tied to the physical building stock. Every heat-pump retrofit, EV-charger install, panel upgrade and re-pipe is work that exists because buildings exist. The electrification push points this demand up, not down.
The part that's oversold
"AI-proof" is not "recession-proof." Construction trades are cyclical — housing slowdowns hit apprentice hiring hard, and the trades saw real unemployment in 2009–2011. AI won't take the job; a credit crunch can pause it.
The office parts are automating first. Estimating, permitting paperwork, scheduling and takeoffs are already software-assisted. That mostly threatens back-office roles at contractors, and mostly helps the tradesperson who owns their own shop.
And the meme has a crowd problem. If a wave of career-switchers floods apprenticeship applications, entry gets more competitive even while the licensed wage floor holds. The moat protects license-holders — the race is getting to the license.
The practical conclusion
The defensible version of the claim: licensed, on-site trades are among the most automation-resistant careers, and the license itself is the durable asset. The move isn't "any trade" — it's picking a licensed trade and starting the hours clock now.
