Washington electrician license requirements
The answer
Washington certifies electricians statewide through L&I. The journey-level certificate requires completing an APPROVED 8,000-hour apprenticeship (4,000 hours on new commercial/industrial work) — raw on-the-job hours alone no longer qualify in-state. Approved apprenticeship (the in-state route)
Complete a chapter 49.04-approved 8,000-hour electrical apprenticeship — at least 4,000 hours on new industrial/commercial installations — then pass the journey-level exam. Since 2023 this is the only in-state route to journey level.
Residential specialty first (4,000 hours)
The residential (02) and several other specialties need 4,000 supervised hours (or an approved specialty apprenticeship) + the specialty exam. Specialty hours with a 4,000-hour requirement credit toward journey-level apprenticeship requirements.
Out-of-state electricians
Washington accepts: an equivalent 8,000-hour out-of-state apprenticeship; an out-of-state journey certificate earned BY EXAM in a state requiring 8,000 supervised hours; 16,000 hours of out-of-state experience; or 8,000 hours in a U.S. armed-forces construction battalion. 4,000 hours must be new commercial/industrial work.
